The world’s first and only mobile poetic first aid service
A mix of the serious, the therapeutic and the theatrical, the Emergency Poet offers consultations inside her ambulance and prescribes poems as cures. There are skulls, jars of eyeballs and other body parts inside the ambulance and in the waiting room under an attached awning Nurse Verse dispenses poemcetamols and other poetic pills and treatments from the poetry pharmacy.
Dressed in white coat an
d stethoscope, Emergency Poet travels in her 1970’s ambulance, accompanied by Nurse Verse or The Poemedic to literary and music festivals, libraries, schools, pubs, weddings and conferences… anywhere where poetic help may be urgently required…
Thanks Deborah for the medicine I am very happy with your 2 choices

What’s your cure for lost love Deborah?
Oh dear David, I am sorry! Always so painful!
The cure; and it is wise and true, is to fall in love with your own good life. This poem should help with that.
It’s hard work, but you can do it! Deb

Thanks for the consultations in Warwick last weekend – I found some Haribos for the children just in time!
Phew! Just in time! I bet they’re feeling much better! Deb x
I really loved my prescription poems, thank you very much
Hope you enjoy the book I recommended
Sue
Thank you Sue! Lovely to meet you! I’m going to look for it now!
Debx
What a fantastic idea! I received a poetic pill from you in Daventry on Friday (17th July) which I loved, but I’ve lost it! I think it was by Antonia Pozzi. Is there any chance you can repeat the prescription? It made me feel better, thanks.
Hello Sue! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Here it is! Deb x
“I have so much faith in you.
I’m as calm as an Arab wrapped in his white Barracan
listening to God make the barley grow around his house.”
Antonia Pozzi
Thank you so much! I’ve never come across this poet and really like her. I will be reading more!
Best of luck with this great project!
Sue
Hello Deborah,
I heard your interview with Chris Evans this morning (8/10/2015).
The poem you read out was just ideal for my present situation.
Unfortunately I could not write it down quick enough and I wondered if you could email it to me.
I think what you are doing is great, I used to quote poems and songs to the residents in an EMI unit where I was a Duty Manager and get positive results.
Unfortunately majority of the rest of the staff were not on my same wavelength and put a stop to my therapy idea’s.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you.
Since regards
Mrs Susan Marie Stephenson
Hello there Susan! Thanks so much for getting in touch! I’m glad you liked one of the poems….I’m not sure which of the 2 I read it was, so will attach them both here… Best wishes, Deb x
To be great, be whole
To be great, be whole: don’t exaggerate
Or leave out any part of you.
Be complete in each thing. Put all you are
Into the least of your acts.
So too in each lake, with it’s lofty life,
The whole moon shines.
Fernando Pessoa

and an extract from ‘The Good News’
They don’t publish the good news.
The good news is published by us.
We have a special edition every moment,
and we need you to read it.
The good news is that you are alive,
and the linden tree is still there,
standing firm in the harsh winter.

Is the book The Emergency Poet supposed to have internal print which is upside down compared to the cover? or should I return it to the supplier for a correct edition?
Oh dear! No! Sounds like you’ve got a faulty copy….yes, send it back to the supplier!
I saw you in Stratford on Avon today, but didn’t like to ask for a poem. Wish I had. I later discovered that my purse had been taken from my bag, so after a lovely day, I was brought back down to earth with a bump. Can you write me a poem for that please. I feel in need of some poetry medication. x
Oh I’m so sorry to read that your purse was taken! In lovely Stratford! How horrible for you! And sorry too that you didn’t come and have a prescription!
Try this reassuring poem by Sheena Pugh? http://poetry-fromthehart.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/sometimes-sheenagh-pugh.html
Best wishes , Deb
Hi Deb, I was stoked to find out about this.. what an amazing idea.. it’s just awesome what you’re doing.
I’m struggling with addiction, after a very painful loss and would be grateful for a poetic remedy.. with much thanks in advance, Jess.
Oh Jess, I’m so sorry to hear this! My warmest wishes to you!
I love this poem by Elizabeth Jennings which speaks of moving out of the pain of grief and loss ;

and also this one by Denise Levertov which is so simple and direct and encouraging…

I LOVED your poem at the end of the Psychology Conference today, thank you.
I hope to see you again somewhere and come for a treatment 🚑
Thank you so much Sonia! Very kind of you to say so! And yes, it would be lovely if our paths cross at some event or other! Deb x
Such a delightful idea! It is a sure sign of our bleak times that something so essential is such an oddity.
Thanks!!
Thanks Alberto!
Thank you so much Alberto!
Hi, I am an artist who is participating at The Art in the Park festival on August in Leamington Spa. I know they are looking to secure quirky performances and art related activities and wondered if it might be worth you getting in touch with the organisers? Have a look at: http://www.artinpark.co.uk
Kind regards,
Jane
Hello Jane!
That is so kind and generous of you! Thanks for the heads-up! I will take a look and get in touch!
Maybe see you there!?
Best Wishes,
Deb x
Fantastic! I loved the idea!
Thank you Leila! Deb
Hello!
I live in Oxford and three years back I picked up a (damaged?*) business card for ‘Emergency Poet’ on the pavement.
I pinned it to my pin board. And it got covered by other stuff as time went on.
Last week, I cleared the board and the business card was revealed again.
And then I thought, I’ll check and see if there is a website.
And there is.
Well, I don’t need a poem right now, but maybe in the future?
Theo H
* It might have been damaged. It was just a drawing of an ambulance with Emergency Poet written on it. Is it a two part card with one part missing?
Hello Theo…sorry I missed your message! There was one part missing! Glad you found me! Best Wishes, Deb
Hello Deborah, when I was a schoolboy and first introduced to poetry l thought then that this would be an ideal subject to return to ,once I had retired. (My career took me in another direction) now retired and still a beginner in poetry, I have approx 7 anthology collections that I am reading and using as a reference.i say reference because they have helped me pull through the worst of a painful illness.i read from the emergency poet of your ambulance and admire your adventurous spirit. From Peter.
Dear Peter,
Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to get in touch! It means a lot to hear your story. I’m so sorry to hear that you have been through a painful illness, but am glad to hear that you found some solace in poetry.
I do hope that you are free of ill-health. Keep reading and very best wishes,
Deborah
Hello Deborah, thanks for your reply (on 11/01/18) to my email. Yes, I am still reading anthologies at present. My rediscovered enthusiasm has not taken me specifically to individual poets collections.
Perhaps this is a mystery to be marvelled at , rather than a problem to be solved. Poetry is weaving a pattern in my recovery that I don’t fully understand.
As always, I wish you well in your vocation and perhaps one day our paths may cross.
Peter.
My partner knows how much I have loved poetry all my life and bought me your book for my birthday. I am devouring it whole. 🙂 I look forward to meeting you at West Norwood Feast, and if you have the time and inclination, offering some suggestions for prescriptions of my own.
…though I think that you may be there on 1st rather than 3rd April, according to the Feast website…? http://westnorwoodfeast.com/
Hello Gill…I’m not at Feast this year I’m afraid!
Thank you so much Gill! Although we’re not at Feast this year I’m afraid! Deb x
I’m reading your book The Emergency Poet. I love the selection and the whole edition, but I am really sad that one of my favourite Portuguese poets, Fernando Pessoa, has been translated from the Romanian!! His poem (To be great, be whole) also has a mistake (it’s instead of its). I do hope it can be corrected in future editions, and that a direct translation from the Portuguese can be included.
Alberto… you are quite right! I can only apologise for the oversight and will contact Michael O’Mara and ask them to change for any future edition! Thank you for going to the trouble to draw it to my attention! Best Wishes, Deborah
Enjoyed listening to your poetry on Woman’s Hour this pm. I was wondering which part of Shropshire you live in? I live in Oswestry but work in the Education department at HMP. Berwyn. Is there any chance you would do some reading at the prison for the men there?
Thank you,
Kind regards
Jane Gosling.
Hello Jane, Thanks so much for your message! I’d be happy to come and read some poetry if you think it’s a good idea?! Maybe we should have a chat on the phone? My email is emergencypoet@gmail.com and we can exchange numbers? Let me know when you’re about for a chat? I live the other side of Welshpool so not too far! Deb x
